Determine Electrical Properties Using Electrical AFM

Technology is electrifying! As amazing and exciting as technology is and how it has transformed our everyday lives, there are a lot of minute details and intricacies involved in developing these advanced technologies. The structural complexities in these high technology industries such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI) require reliable devices, and determining electrical properties on a device is an essential step in this process. That’s where materials characterization can help in the development of the perfect device.

AFM vs Electrical AFM

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis provides images using nanoscale spatial resolution to measure surface topography. In electrical AFM, sample surface electrical and/or electromechanical properties are mapped out with a nanometer-scale spatial resolution. The AFM electrical property map and surface landscape can be imaged in the same area simultaneously.

Electrical AFM can measure the electrical/electromechanical properties of various functional materials and samples. This helps distinguish between conductive and nonconductive areas or polar and nonpolar regions of a device. This information is ideal for the research and development and failure analysis of functional materials and devices.

How can Eurofins EAG help?

In the semiconductor industry, we have helped manufacturers test ultra-thin dielectrics on their devices. Resistance, polarization, and capacitance mapping combined with point contact spectroscopy using electrical AFM can evaluate the health and quality of an ultrathin dielectric grown on a semiconductor. Electrical AFM analysis on a thin dielectric can help advance quantum computing and semiconductor industries. At Eurofins EAG, we have developed methods to help determine the reliability of your product.
